WET54GS5 setup is driving me crazy!

I purchased a Linksys WET54GS5 and want to use it to let some networkable A/V equipment in my living room access my current network (based on an Asante FR-1004 wireless G router). I set the WET to manually (static IP) and the Asante router is on The WET is set to use "infrastructure" mode and other settings look correct. I use WPA security and set up the WET to use WPA and entered the password. The WET apparently communicates with the router since I can access the browser-based setup of the WET54GS5 wirelessly. However, when I attach something (such as a laptop for testing purposes) to one of the ports on the bridge no IP address is set. My router is set to hand out IP addresses via DHCP. I don't understand this at all. Does the fact that I set the bridge to a "static" IP mean that clients attached to the WET's switch ports must be assigned static IPs as well (not sure how to do it if that is the case)? Any thoughts on this? Two weeks of putzing with this thing have produced nothing!
