    Hallo there,

I am totally new in this on router and WAN’s. But in my house I wanted to have a wireless network so I bought:

WRT54G and a PCI card (WMG54v2) for my PC upstairs in the house. I have a company laptop (IBM) with a build in WIFI functionality. This laptop works fine when I’m downstairs. (Strong signal), although channel 6 seems to be the only channel that works ok. I Installed the pc on the second floor, and this one shows a very week signal (2 megabit connection). I updated the WRT54G with HyperWRT v1.3 for WRT54G and followed the instructions. I increased the power boost to 84 but it seems to have little effect on the reach of the WRT54G.

What can I do more.? Are there more adjustment i must or can made with this new firmware to increase the reach of the router.

I tried channel 13 but this totally kills the connection and I hade to adjust the setting by using a cable

    Thanks in advance

You can try placing the wrt54g on another place, for example in the center of the house, first floor. If that doesn't help you can try installing higher gain antenna's on the wrt54g and/or the wireless clients.

I found the best solution was adding a direction antenna on the wireless device and not the WRT54G. most devices have crap antennas for transmit and recieve.

i would recommend the D-Link DWL-M60AT Antenna for a wireless pci card without a doubt.

Indeed, I have this one for my Wireless PCI Cards (they just cost 10 € each) :
That way I can place the standard antenna away from my pc, on a higher place and this does the trick (from 36mbps to 54mbps) :)

the best channels are 1 6 and 11. you may want to try using netstumbler with your laptop. walk around the house finding the best signal strengths.

also try using G mode and not Mixed mode. also position your wrt54g antennas at a 45 degree angle may help.

make sure if you have cordless phones that they are not interfering with the wireless sognal. most DECT phones can allow for signal chanel changing as well.

Thanks a lot for the info. I will use all the advice to see if I can improve the current situation. Further more I’am interested in the 10 euro solution. Where could I get a thing like that. I live in the Netherlands perhaps I can order it via Internet.

    Thanks a lot
