What WiFi Channel is the best?

I have a Linksys WRT54G router since last Saturday, and I am wondering what channel will give me the best performance and coverage in my area.

The only current used channel in my area is channel 1, which is used by 2 people.

I am using channel 11 at the moment which is the routers' default.

I've heard that there are 3 non-overlapping channels which are the best to use, but I would like that someone can confirm that to me.

    Thanks in advance,

there is no definative rules on which channel to use. 1, 6 and 11 are prefered as they are further apart from each other, but all should give the same signal strength. the main issue really is if there are any other wifi signals around your home from other wifi users, if so then chose a channel that is not the same as that or close to it if possible.

the one with nobody else on it . most routers in a box use ch11 so i use 7 its an odd number and i have only seen 1 other using it in the past 12 months of casual wardriving.

The benefits of non-overlapping channels have been overly simplified. The best practice in general is to set to the channel that is the least occupied and the furthest away from all other channels in use.
