I was asking questions on the dshield.org e-list and someone told me that certain linksys routers can run linux. I'm most interested in remote administration using ssh but being able to do things like ping my main internal box and port forward smtp to a fall over box after doing a wakeup lan to start it are on my list of ideas.

If I am figured things out correctly, the WRT54GL is the current router to purchase. Is that the best pick that is currently being sold?

    If not please advise.

This looks like it could be a fun project.

    You are correct.

If you can find a WRT54GS v1.0-v3.0 (new or eBay) it'll have 32MB of RAM and 8MB of flash, both are twice the amount of a WRT54GL.
