I have a WRT54G v4 and picked up a 7dbi high gain antenna and tried the Linksys, dd-wrt, tomato and hyperwrt and they seen to all about the same. I have a laptop about 30 feet and 4 walls way and getting a low to good signal.
Same as the std antenna that came with router. I increased the TX a little, but did not see any change. Am I expecting too much

dont forget, wireless is a two way issue. first of all the WRT54G should be able to boost the signal (I find about 80mW-100mW best) but your laptop has to send data to the WRT which you have not boosted at all. make sure the wireless adapter is set to maximum performance (when using external power supply)
