Hi all this is my first post in this fourm and I just wanted to know what the heck is the difference between WRT54G and the WRT54GS model besides the speed boost? Does one give you any more features also I have been reading up on some of the new firmware that you can download from sveasoft once you install this it is a GUI interface or is it command line?

    Anyway thanks for you input.

    WRT54G v WRT54GS

    Welcome to LinksysInfo!

First, the jury is still out on ALL the differences between the WRT54G and WRT54GS, especially the v2 WRT54G. So far, no one has taken a peek under the radio cover to see if there in fact are any differences in the actual radio unit. Other than that, the GS model has double the memory of the G, 32MB RAM, 8MB flash v. 16MB, 4 MB flash. Both have a 200Mhz CPU (faster than other versions).

There are siginificant differences between the v1.0, v1.1, and v2.0 of the WRT54G. The concensus is if you are going to get the G (almost half the price of the GS) go for the v2.0.

Regarding firmware, there are several version available all of which add some significant enhancements and bug fixes.

    Available versions include:
    WiFi-Box »wifi-box.sourceforge.net/
    Sveasoft »www.sveasoft.com/modules/phpBB2/
    OpenWRT »openwrt.ksilebo.net/

So far, the Sveasoft version is the only one that is available for both routers. Luckily, it appears to be only a few NVRAM flags that need to be changed to support the GS, so the others should be compatible soon too.

If you are going to go for the WRT54G and are shopping in a retail store check the product serial number. The box may still say v 1.1, but if the NS begins with CDF5, then it's ver 2.0. If it's CDF3, then it's a v1.1.

Hope this site can help you out, and great to have you on board!

In this case you're probably best off refering to the stated version either on the box or on the bottom of the router. It should be either a v1.1 or v1.0. Version 1.0 routers do not have a version listed.
