Wii friend tracking script (does it exist?)

I love my Wii and I love my router :)

But for some dumb reason, the Wii doesn't make it easy for you to know when your friends are playing on their Wii. And you feel like a dork if you keep asking your friends "I'm online. Are you?"

Has anyone written a script that monitors the LAN for Wii activity and as soon as it detects activity (that is not just the Wii updating its settings overnight) sends a message / updates a website (e.g. Facebook) to let the rest of the world know you are on your Wii? Seems like a flexible router firmware would be the first place to try - it knows everything about what is going on on my router.

It seems so simple I have to believe that somebody somewhere has done this, but either I am searching for the wrong search terms or there is a gaping hole in the world of hacks and mods.

    Any suggestions?
