    Hi all,

I have a WAP54G set in Client Mode to connect to my schools wireless network to bridge it to my local lan/wan.

On the WAP54G it shows that the school's signal strength is 20%-30% on average.

The signal is good enough to surf the net, but its not as fast as a direct cable or dsl connection for sure.

I was wondering if high gain antennas will help my situation? They are quite expensive, so I don't want to spend money for nothing! I don't know how strong my signal will have to get to have a noticible difference... and I am not sure anyone can give me that exact answer

it should..high DB antenna should able to gain quiet good strong singal

one more thing , try to place your WAP54G near a window or an open-area , singal may improve too..you will never know..on the other hand , those high-gain antenna will help you (thats why war-drivers use them)

or you can build your own antenna from a potato chip can , etc (prigles , etc..) , there are many ways !

the linksys high gain antenna's didn't help me.

When i put my WAP54G by my window, i get about 35% signal.

When i move it onto my desk I get about 15% signal.

I installed the high gain antenna's when i had it on my desk, the signal did not increase, it stayed at 15%.

I may have to just move it to my window :\ The only problem with this is I will have a wire running across my floor to the window. I was hoping the high gain antenna's boosted me to 35% by my desk.

is there any other way i can boost the signal? Can i give it more power at all?

i will try a parabloic reflector

will increasing the power output help my situation? With Neo Firmware I can crank it up to 84mw ... which is supposedly dangerous and can cause health hazards? What is the highest I can go without endangering my health? :p

okay, increasing the power output did not help my situation

I did speed tests with and without the high gain antennas... i actually got a worse average upload and download with high gain antennas over about 20 speed tests.

I moved my WAP54G back to my window and I get so much better of a signal... it would be stupid for me to keep it by my desk.

So I guess I will just work on setting things up by my window.

If I have my WAP54G in Client Mode to my schools wireless, how far away should I put my WRT54G which is going to broadcast my local WAN so that the two do not interfere with each other? My school is on channel 11, will it help to put my local WAN on a different channel? If they are on different channels, should I still keep them far apart?
