Will HyperWRT work with US linksys products?

I am perplexed that Linksys has US and other localized versions of their firmware
yet HyperWRT 2.0 seems to only be a single release. How is this done since
HyperWRT is based off of the Linksys firmware. In particular, HyperWRT 2.0
claims to support 13 channels but only 11 are legal in the US. Are the channels
in exactly the same frequency ranges world-wide but only differ in the number that
are legal to use? Or do you select your region manually in HyperWRT? Also
if you are upgrading from the most recent Linksys US firmware will HyperWRT
automatically configure itself for the US and limit itself to 11 channels? Thanks in
    advance for any clarifications.

You will end up having 13 channels regardless, and there is no region/country selection in the firmware except for clock synchronization.

US version firmware only differs in having channels 12 and 13 disabled and since firmwares are basically software this can be done easily by a little reprogramming. Everything else is identical since both US and EU versions are based on the same GPL source code. HyperWRT and other custom firmwares are also based on the same set of source codes.
