    i currently have the wireless G (WRT54GS) with Firmware Version: v4.71.1, Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c

well its been alright but never really great. i live next to the main comcast station for our region so im 4x faster then the average cable user boasting pretty respectable speeds. my computer is a wired desktop but my wifes isnt. she has a wireless laptop.

so im looking at upgrading to the new wireless N router. my question is this. i know the N will work with a B/G but do i have to get her a wireless N adapter also? she has an internal wireless adapter so id like to not have to get her something that protrudes but if it means faster speeds i guess ill do it. any ideas?

What are your complaints about the 54G?
What are your expectations for your upgrade?

802.11N access point are usually compatible with 802.11b/G, but you would see no improvement in those modes.

i pretty much got the bugs worked outta my router with the firmware upgrade but now and again while im gaming it just goes wacko and my connection slows down a lot. its no big deal cause its RARE now and i really dont play games much .

what im ultimately getting at is this. do i need to get a wireless N adapter to take full advantage of the wireless N router when/if i get one?

yes, you need a wireless N adapter to take advantage of a wireless N router/network.
HOWEVER, the 802.11N norm has still not been finalized, so there is no such router available. You have pre-N routers, but there is no guaranty that they will be able to upgrade to full N functionalities (as those are not defined).
