I am trying to set up on of my clients with a WMP54G adapter to be used with my WRT54GS router with WPA security - only problem is that I cannot get the WMP54G to recognize anything but WEP and it will not connect. Any suggestions? I'm also having "internet connectivity" issues in unsecured mode with the thing. I don't think the two are related, but...

The WPA2 hotfix is not required for WPA support on a Windows XP SP2 setup, but has been found to help with disconnects. In addition, you should broadcast your SSID, when using WPA.
