    Hi everyone!

Ok, so here is my situation: I have a WRT54GS router with WPA TKIP encryption being used. Yesterday, I bought a WRE54G to extend the signal to the other side of my house. So, I went into it and enable WPA TKIP encryption using the same settings and password as my router. However, my laptop won't connect!

Thanks for any help or ideas you may have!

After you setup the WRE54G, did you power cycle it and what colors are the LEDs, Both LEDs should blink blue if you are connected to the the WRT54GS. The WRE54G should have the MAC Address of the Wireless part of Your WRT54GS. The latest firmware added WPA-PSK TKIP. If you are using MAC filtering on your router, make certain that the MAC Address of the WRE54G is included in the list of Computers Allowed to connect to the router.

Yes, I do have two blue lights. It actually all works fine when I don't use any security. But I'm not about to leave my network open just to extend my range! And no, I don't use mac filtering.

The WRE54G do not support WPA TKIP, only WEP ;-(

The latest firmware (1.04.17) supports both WEP and WPA-TKIP. I've been using it w/ WPA-TKIP for months without a hitch, actually.

Hmm, strange....I have used the 1.4.17 firmware (ever used
the new 1.5.18 version) and none of the above works with
wpa tkip/pre shared only wep, so have too conclude that either
it only works with a specific wrt54g firmware or the wpa feature is
not active, but shown, in the firmware.
(or thats the way it is in my case, cant see anything about wpa on
the product at the linksys website either)

Im having the same nightmare, Id like to return it,but I thought you could not, once the box was opened?

I cannot get a linksys range extender WRE54G connected, to see a wireless network, with a linksys WRT54G wireless router v.2.1

I see nothing on support site to auto install it from web?!

on set up wizard, it cannot find the wireless network, but both laptops are connected to the web!!

Best Buy accepted the return. I used the "would not setup" explaination, which is true.

I was able to get my WRE54G to work with WPA-PSK TKIP only with HyperWRT, but I switched to a WRT54GX to get better range and eliminated the WRE54G. You also lose MAC address filtering with the WRE54G since it retransmits the packets with its own MAC address. If you are using MAC address filtering you have to add the MAC address of the WRE54G to the list of PCs allowed to access the router.

After applying the 1.4.17 firmware I was able to get WPA to work... but only for about 1/2 hr. After that none of my clients could connect nor could I get to the HTML interface via my wired client connected to the WRT54G. I unpluged it, waited about a minute and it worked again but only for about 1/2 hr. Repeat about 3 times and contected Linksys tech support. They concluded it was a defective unit but I doubt that. I think they have problems rolling keys, or something like that.
