    I have a Linksys wireless-G 2.4 ghz 54Mbps Broadband router model WRT54G 4 port switch, v 5.

I purchased this when I bought a laptop for my daughter which already had all the wireless equipment to automatically connect to my cable internet thru the WRT54G.

I have another desktop that I need to make capable of connecting to this same internet connection. It is a compac with XP pro. Do I need a wireless adaptor? What kind would be best to connect with the WRT54G router?

Does the WRT54G v 5 - need any software upgrades?

    you have 2 choices

    1. Connect the compaq desktop directly to the router via ethernet cable(the standard RJ45s), thats provided the compaq has a free ethernet port.

    2. Purchase a wireless adaptor for the compaq =)
i'd suggest a USB version as its probably the easiest to set up, and its way more portable than a pci card version
