WRT54G connection drops

I'm having trouble with my WRT54G (hardware rev 2.2, using official 4.20.something firmware). I have an NTL 10mb cable connection and I'm getting close to my theoretical maximum speed, which is nice.

However it seems that if I max out my bandwidth then I lose connection. I have two wireless devices (laptop and Xbox 360) which both lose connection at the same time. I can still get to the router and its config pages, but not to my cable modem or the outside world. Renewing DHCP doesn't work - I have to power cycle the cable modem.

This happens nearly all of the time when downloading large demos etc over Xbox live.

Is this one of the known defects with the stock Linksys firmware, and would changing to a third-party firmware fix it?

I realise the problem may have nothing to do with the router but NTL aren't exactly renowned for their customer support, and the cable modem lights and status pages indicate that it's not directly a problem with signal levels etc.

    Thanks for any help

Sorry, I've now learnt that the first thing to do when suspecting router failure is to remove the router from the loop and try again. The router's fine, it's the cable modem.
