picked up a wrt54g (v5, of course. DOH!) a few months ago...set it up...all looked good. had excellent signal strength, everything seemed to be working fine with my RoadRunner cable connection. After a few days, the router started losing its DNS on a daily basis...sometimes a few times a day. I could still ping an IP, but not a web address...no browsing, no email. i can still see the router, and still show an "excellent" signal, just no internet. Getting pretty tired of seeing "page could not be displayed". after some troubleshoting, figured out that unplugging the router for 10-15 seconds ALWAYS cures the problem. figuring i got a lemon, i took the router back and exchanged it for a new one. Still having the exact same problem with the new router. It is very annoying when you're right in the middle of something and all of a sudden the DNS craps out and i have to go and reset the router. linksys tech support has been no help whatsoever. the don't seem to have a clue what is going on.
so before i take a 10lb sledge to the router and mash it into tiny bits, anyone have any suggestions for me to try? i swore i'd never buy another linksys product after the problems i had with my last wired router, and here i am again. HELP!

    Same problem

I have a V4 wrt54gs and have the same problem! Now I can't seem to flash the bios with either a real linksys one or any 3rd party one.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    I use RR as well.

    same problem

I have a wrt54g v5 router and am experiencing the same problem. I have a 54g pci card in my desktop running win xp home and i have broadcom card intergrated in my Gateway MX 7118 laptop.
I can surf for a few hours maybe if i am lucky and then the all to familiar status bar lag ( the page won't load ). Once i lose internet on my laptop, if i go to my desktop it will let me browse the internet. Sometimes i can see my network from my laptop and sometimes i can't. sometime i can print from my laptop and sometimes i can't. Once i reboot my laptop all seems to be fixed. Sometimes the release / renew command will fix the problem.
Can anybody please help me. I am figuring it is the router but why would my desktop let me get to the net and not my laptop. Could it be that linksys 54g pci card is more forgiving than my broadcom in my Gateway laptop?

This is so frustrating. I just want it to work.

i had the same problem & got a solution

    1. The router is not to blame here
    2. I suspect the problem is a race between the cable modem 'boot'
(slow) and the wrt54g when a connection is temporarily lost

    The solution:

solution 1: configure the computer in your LAN to use static DNS
copy the values from the wrt54g status window when
the DNS is up. This works fine for me.

Solution 2: configure the wrt54g to use static DNS. This is the best
solution but it did'nt work for me - my L2TP failed to
