WRT54G: HyperWRT for increasing range

I need to get more range from a WRT54G. I plan
to turn off one antenna (to disable diversity),
then hook an external panel or yagi to the other
terminal. Then use HyperWRT to crank up power.

I'll admit that I have some qualms about HyperWRT.
I haven't seen much in the way of manuals, FAQs
    or support.

Someone on the HyperWRT site recently asked
'which antenna is the right and which is left?'
There was some speculation that R-L was spec'd
as looking at the back panel, but no one seemed
to know for sure. (Anyone know?)

What is the safe range for setting power without
blowing up the WRT, and how many mW can I expect?
