WRT54G LAN LED Blinks Once Per Second - Why?

My WRT54G is connected on one (of the 4) LAN ports to an 8-port
switch; the switch hooks up several PCs to the LAN. The WRT54G
wireless subsystem is disabled - i.e., it is effectively a wired router.

The router performs as expected: no problems with connecting via
    ADSL modem to the Internet.

What is puzzling me is the continuous once-per-second synchronised
blink of all (active) LEDs on the switch. The LAN LED on the WRT54G
(connection to switch) also blinks at the same time. So I'm guessing
the router must be causing this blinking, because when it's not active
(powered off), the indivual switch LEDs only blink when there's traffic,
    as expected.

Is this regular heartbeat/pulsed blink normal behaviour?

I'd appreciate if others out there with WRT54G routers could let me
know if their routers are behaving similarly. Any additional information
on why the router could be doing this would also be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

You can use a packet sniffer if you want to be sure about it, but likely it's STP data the router sends out...
