The new firmware released by Linksys for WRT54G series upto Hardware version 4 changes the router name to WRT54GL. Does anyone know about that is this by mistake or it was Linksys's intent?

Also, WRT54GL download page on Linksys shows the latest firmware available as 4.30.2 but after download the router GUI shows the firmware version as 4.30.5.

I hope Linksys knows what they are doing?

do you think the renaming of the"router name" will have any effect on performance? no. it is just a name change.

change the router name to "WRT300n" for all you like, it doesn't matter, it worn't do PreN

Yep, this happened to me...I called Linksys on it and they had no impact no idea and said they would get back to me...been about 10 days with no response....I ditched the official linksys firmware for latest DD-WRT firmware...and my reasoning (may be twisted but it is my own ) was that if linksys didn't know that it was doing that, what else did they do....maybe bad maybe not. I wasn't going to fiddle with it anymore.

@Toxic...not so sure that it was just a name change....it changes the model name (upper right corner of the linksys setup page)...try reflashing it with a non-gl linksys firmware...fails everytime...

It is a name change. On the main screen (Basic Setup), you yourself can change the router's name to whatever you want (and yes it changes the name in the upper right corner too!).

That firmware was designed for the WRT54GL which is why the name defaults to that. The firmware is backward compatible though with earlier versions.

Strange...changed my router name to whatever and it never changed the model to the router name always stayed to what the firmware changed it to.
