I just upicked up a v3 wrt54g this weekend. I've looked around for a compatible 3rd party firmware, but the highest version all of them seem to support is 2.2. I've read that 2.2 is essentially the same as version 3. Is there any problem grabbing one of these and flashing it on or should i hold off until there is official support for v3?

look guys. support in 3rd will be there. v3.0 routers are very new. give it time.

there are fundamental changes in the hardware that makes QoS and VLAN operation difficult. once linksys/broadcom release a driver that will work correctly i am sure the will be more firmwares.

I'm running Sveasoft "Alchemy-pre7a" on two WRT54G v3 routers. Seems to be working fine.
