WRT54G V5 + service name

I've been reading the forums and gathered mixed information.

My problem is this past weekend my provider (ISP) upgraded their network and now require service name in order to authenticate; after I learned this I tried to add service name but found there is no such option in my WRT54G V5.0 router.

After reading this site, I've learned only way to have service name is to have 3rd party firmware, the DD-WRT firmware.

However, one stickied post suggests that this firmware cannot be installed on v5 router. But there are several others, even a how-to that suggests it can be installed and provide a how-to guide with pictures on how to do it.

    In short,

    1) Is there a way to have service name field without installing 3rd party firmware?
    2) Is it possible to install the DD-WRT firmware on my router being v5?

Check the date on the sticky - things have moved on - but its still "risky"

    1) Lobby Linksys tech support - I'm sure vxworks can do it, but only they can patch the code, and only if enough people ask I guess they'd also have to patch V7 and V8 code...?
    2) Yes, but only a limited micro version using a special flashing procedure

THanks, I doubt lobbying linksys will render any quick result
so I must consider the 2nd option for now

What happens if the installation of DD-WRT fails, is it possible to revert to Linksys OS?

Depends how good your soldering skills are worst case! OK I don't know I haven't tried!

If you go the dd-wrt micro route, follow the instructions TO THE LETTER, especialy w.r.t. the versions of the firmware (vs. your router version) pieces uploaded to the WRT used to kill VxWorks, the times for don't-touch-while-x-is-happening, etc.
Many people have done this succesfully, so it's not THAT tricky. Search the www.dd-wrt.com website.

AFAIK you can go back to stock firmware, but this is even trickier than going to dd-wrt. You would not want to though... ;)
