Hello All, My laptop is a HP Pavillion Dv1000, running Windows XP SP2. The built in wireless card is "Intel PRO/BG 2200 Wireless LAN Adapter" with the HP Provided drivers. I just bought yesterday Linksys router WRT54G to share my Cable Internet connection over the wireless. I am a total newbie to Wireless networking. It is not working at all though, I have spent hours now trying to figure out a clue, but in vain. I have followed all the basic procedure as explained in the setup guides that came with the router and given on the webiste for easy home networking section. To my amazement, there are some widely noted issues in the WRT54G running Ver 7.00.(1-6) of the firmware ; There are no firmware versions or downloads available on the international (USA) site for WRT54G ver 7. In the selection list there is Ver 1 to Ver 6 and then Ver 8. The only place I was able to find a firmware revision or update was at China website for linksys. This just came to my mind since the label on my router clearly said its "Made in China". Use the change country option on www.linksys.com to arrive there. Although I did the firnware upgrade present over there, but not without a glitch in which once the router was dead and ran in Management Mode plus I had to translate the chinese site using (babelfish.altavista.com). Dont know whether it was all worth the effort upgrading from 7.00.1 (originally out of box) to 7.00.6. One Firmware according to firmware tracker (on www.linksysinfo.org) is made for WRT54G Hardware ver 7.00.X and the firmware ver itself is 1.0.0x. I tried upgrading to it using the standard web configuration interface, and during the middle of the task when the progress bar was around 50% , it crashed and the Internet Explorer window went blank showing a time-out or similar message. According to a couple of websites its stated that you downgrade your Wired ethernet speed to 10Mbps or 10-BaseT Half Duplex , when upgrading the firmware using a CAT5 ethernet cable, it didnt really seemed to have an impact on my case, so I cannot comment whether firmware upgrade cannot be done on a high speed 100Mbps connection to router or not. Any of the easy home networking software including " EasyLink Connect Advisor" on www.linksys.com is not working and recognizing my linksys router. This software after diagnosing my router says "Unrecognized or Leagcy version of Linksys", which is again a surprise, since it is recently bought. According to my reading the LinkSys only in Ver 7.00.x of the routers have used Athreos chipsets instead of BroadCom and therefore they cannot be upgraded at all with any Third Party Firmwares (like DD-WRT and HyperWRT). This obviously voids the warranty too. Any body like to share any views or give me tips regarding the above-mentioned I would be grateful. Since a lot of opinions make it all too confusing. Regards, AlterEgo.
