WRT54G works only on certain ADSL phone lines in the house

Hi Ive got this peculiar problem with my WRT54g (dont know the version)

I have been using my WRT54G for some time now but have only recently attempted to use it to access the Internet. The problem is the following:

The router works perfectly when hooked to the phone socket (or plugs or whatever you call the thing on the wall where you plug in the phone cable) on the first floor but refuses to connect to the Internet when I hook it to the phone socket on the second storey. More precisely, the DSL LED blinks for a couple of seconds and then quits, starts blinking again after some time and so on and so forth. The INTERNET LED never turns itself on. I realise this is probably not the routers fault but I decided to mention it anyway. What could be wrong, either with the connection or the router.

I might also add that if I connect a phone to this socket the plug has to be arranged and pushed around before it works. (I suspect a bad contact between plug and socket but if the DSL LED is blinking I assume that it SEES my DSL connction but cant connect properly for some reason).

Any ideas or advice is gladly accepted
    Thanks in advance

There is no DSL LED on a WRT54G, it cannot interface directly with a DSL line, there must be a DSL 'modem' between the the telephone line and WRT54G. Are you sure that you are plugging into a phone jack and not an ethernet network jack on the first floor?
