    Hey gang!

I was wondering if anyone could help me please.

My WRT54GL (with dd-wrt if that makes any difference) is on the lower floor of my house, and I have some brick internal walls. Signal reaches most places in the house OK, but there are a couple of dead spots upstairs.

From what I understand, higher gain antennas might not make much of a difference in terms of going through the walls. So I was looking at maybe using a wre54g as a signal booster, positioning it near the dead spots I'm trying to reach.

My problem is that I use static IP addys for the wireless products in my house (5 laptops) to monitor individual bandwidth use, etc. I understand that the WRE54G uses its own mac address. What I need to know is - do devices connecting through it show at the router (I'm using static IP by assigning MAC addys to IP addresses) as their own MAC addy or the expander's?

I guess my other option would be to use another WRT54GL as a repeater, but it's a bit more expensive.

Any input (or things I haven't thought of) much appreciated!

I would think the the clients connectred to the range expander would have their own ips and MACs, as the expander is mearly an AP with WDS active and no LAN ports. It's not a bridge, which would cause the issue you're worried about. using another WRT as a repeater should yield the same end result as using the WRE, with the notable diffrence that the WRE does not have a replaceable antenna and probably has a slightly weaker radio in it.

Thanks mate. The reply is appreciated.

I hadn't considered that the wrt54gl would have a more powerful radio, but that makes sense. Maybe it would be better just to go for another one of those in that case.
