I am looking to buy two routers and bridge (I'll post a seperate topic on this?) them together. From what I can tell, the G and GS are on to v5 now which don't allow for 3rd party firmwares. I have been looking at the WRT54GL. I have a few questions I was hoping to get some help with.

    1. Is a WRT54GL essentially a G v4?
    2. Will a WRT54GL allow for 3rd party firmwares?
    3. Other than going to local stores and and searching for serial numbers to match a G/GS v4, is there any other way to find a G/GS v4?

    Thanks in advance.

    1 The WRT54GL is essentailly a v4 router.
    2. Yes, the L is for linux so it can use 3rd party firmwares.
    3. not really unless you phone and ask sales reps who may not actually do this.

    2. I own a WRT54GL and can verify it has 3rd party firmware support. I initially flashed it with the mini version as recommended and then flashed it with the standard version.

    3. You can try eBay

Just get the GL. I spent a week trying to get a G or GS with the right version, and people are paying more than they're worth, certainly more than you can get a GL for.
