Hey peeps, posted this here as its not aimed at a particular firmware. Basically im running a 20mbps connection through a wrt54gs v5.1. Currently have dd-wrt firmware loaded to it. I want to know what is the best way to set this router up so it can handle the speeds nicely as it seems to be slower then the computer being connected staright through the modem.
    Thank you

DD-WRT is known to be a bit slower than some of the other firmware.
Otherwise, depending if you connect through wire or wireless, not much to be done.
Wire traffic should be able to handle the 20Mbps. Wireless will depend a lot onb your wireless card and connection. I can barely pull that kind of traffic between my wired and my wireless computers...

for that speed, tomato. I can guarantee ddwrt is limiting your bandwidth a pretty decent amount. it couldn't even handle my 3 meg dsl connection when I had torrents going.

putting any network device into the equation will slow down the data handling rather than using nothing at all. it inspects each data packet before sending them on to what ever computer needs it. the router handles NAT, Firewall and SPI.

afaik only ddwrt supports your 5.1 WRT54G.

So basically im stuck with this. The only thing i can do is fine the most best version of firmware to use and change settings around?

To my knowledge, Tomato does not have a micro version. Tomato's official site for firmware download is here, but since your router is WRT54G v5, I don't think it would work for your router. I this is the only forum that I know of that provides decent support for Tomato firmware.
