I've managed to set up one of my linksys wrt54g devices in the cliet mode and have been able to use it to access a public site by entering the ssid of the public site in the set up.....is it possible to use other settings so that I don't have to know/insert the ssid of the AP in each location where I go (I'm on a boat).....

Second....I'd like to use a second WRT54G as a proper wireless router linked (via ethernet) to the device that functions as a bridge....any guidance as to how this would work would be appreciated as I've not been able to decipher the proper settings.....should I be using WDS instead of the client mode???

Not sure i understand your first question.. but if you are trying to see if there are access points out there that you can connect to.. try NetStumbler.
