WRT54GS v.4 Runs Very Slowly

I have a WRT54GS v.4 router and over time the wireless connection slows to a crawl. Eventually it slows so much that all connections both internal and external time out. At a point, it becomes so slow that it begins to drop the wireless signal to the connected computers. The only solution that I have been able to find is to reboot the router (power off, wait 30 seconds, power on). This always restores signal to the computers when it has been dropped and usually clears up the speed settings. The wired switch works fine all the time, with no speed problems whatsoever. I am running the Linksys firmware, version 1.06.1. The router has a very basic configuration of WEP protected wifi, with SSID broadcast on. All of the "advanced" wireless configuration settings have been left at default.

Thanks in advance for any help, and sorry I sound like such a noob (I am one, after all).
