I recently purchased a gs2.1 and a gl1.1 at a local retail store i went to linksys website and saw a lot of updated firmware. should i update to the latest firmware, or just go direct to a 3rd partie driver. also wich one of the two should i keep or are they pretty much the same thing.

Well your GS has twice the amount of memory than the GL so I'd keep it.

As for firmware, it all depends on what you want to do with your connection. If the Linksys firmware gives you all of the options you want then stick with it. If you need "option overload" then upgrade to DD-WRT. If you aren't satisfied with the Linksys firmware but don't need everything DD-WRT gives you then look at HyperWRT Thibor.

thanks for the info ill keep the gs model. do i have to upgrade every update one by one or do i just go to the latest one and that will have me covered.also i see that lots of people show more than one router in the sigs is it recomended to keep a back or is one good enough.
