I am a computer tech and I purchased wrt54gs v5 routers for 2 seperate clients. No choice thats all they had. Well the problem is that when they connect using AOL the router will reboot itself. Two seperate clients one has dsl one has cable all connected wirelessly with 2 computers connected each. Both using WPA wireless security. Both have 1.50.5 firmware.

When I called linksys they told me to try all sort of dum things like disable antivirus. that was their second level tech support. They also said to try old firmware but they have not sent it to me an email yet.

Thought I would inform people and also see if I can get any ideas how to solve it.

Try exchanging them for WRT54GL's, which is the Linux version of the WRT54G series. Or see if Linksys will RMA them and replace them with the "older" Linux based model. I've heard reports of that happening.

I did an RMA return of a WRT54G Version 5 last week. So I will see what they send me. I asked them not to send me a version 5, and to send either a WRT54GL or version 4 or older.

I have been in contact with them and they are giving me a hard time trying to get the version 4 of the routers. They are making me wait for a senior tech to call me back to confirm this is a problem. They are giving me the story of they do not replace routers with different models or versions than what is sent to them.

The other incredible thing was that they previously told me that they would have to test this in their labs. I tried to get them to explain to me why I had to wait for them to check their product in the lab before sending me an older version. They told me that they have not tested this router with aol. 8O

What alternatives are there to wrt54gs. Because to me it seemed that with the gs version you would get a little more distance without the extra cost of the srx models. reason being is that these routers are going into locations where neghbors have their own wireless networks. The alternative would have to be something I can easily purchase from say staples.

WRT54GL is the good old Linux model. What used to be the WRT54GS v4 is now the "GL" model. Same unit different labelling for the "niche" of people who actually want their product to work. The pinnacle of stability and flexibility. Replace the factory rubber-ducky antenna with bigger ones if you want more range.

Most people look more at CHEAP than good, so they found a way to cut a few cents on the production costs by chopping out some flash and RAM, hence the junky v5 units.

I was told by a friend, who has a computer business, the exchange could take 3 or 4 weeks for them to ship the replacement unit out.
