Curious as to whether or not I can turn my WRT54Gv4 into the WRT54GSv4. Not interested in running 3rd party firmwares either. With the two models being 100% identical under the hood I thought that maybe there was a way to get the GSv4 firmware to install and run on the Gv4.

I don't know about stock GS firmware working on the regular v4, but many people have got Thibor's HyperWRT for the GS working on the G v4. See the hyperwrt.org forums for more details. There is a ton of good info there and getting it to work takes some time. You first need to flash to a mini version of dd-wrt and then you flash the latest version of Thibor's firmware. The v4 G and v4 GS units are very stubborn though and are easily bricked to this is a risk. If you follow the guides on how to fix bricks you can always get them back though. And once you get Thibor's firmware on there it is a very stable and good running router.
Of course Tofu 10 is very good too and easier to get loaded. You might just want to do that.

AFAIK no way to do it with straight Linksys FW

Why should they give you a GS for the price of a G? I have tried it with 3rd party on my G v4. Pretty easy, just remember to do a 30 second reset between each step to be safe. FF works well as the browser.

    1) Flash with DD-WRT mini v23 generic to get the loader for the larger firmware
    2) Flash the latest Hyperwrt Thibor build for the GS
Router should confess to being a GS with the Linksys FW and the Thibor augmentations

You could try flashing to the straight Linksys GS v4 FW in step 2, but I don't know of anyone who has done it-why give up Thibor's extensions?

    Good luck!
