HI, i just bought the new wrt54gx4 and i am having problems with the wireless download speed. Using my laptop with a wireless g card i can download a file at around 280 kb/s. However, when i connect the laptop to the router with a wired connection, i am downloading the exact same file at 700 kb/s.

I put the laptop right next to the router so distance wasn't an issue, and i tried all of the recommended channels 1, 6, and 11.

I'm new to wireless, and i was just wondering if something was wrong with my particular router.

I have a WRT54GX4 and haven't see this. Things to try, make sure the router is set to "G Only" in the wireless section. Also try turning off the Firewall(SPI) and see if that helps. There are some known issues with SPI and this chipset(it's also an issue with the Netgear Rangemax 240 as well). Make sure you don't have any 2.4ghz phones/devices near the area, as they can play a role sometimes.

Also testing your speeds via wired and wireless, at a speedtest site like www.speakeast.net/speedtest or under "Tools" at www.broadbandreports.com

Note: disabling the Firewall is not a huge deal because the inherent security of running NAT with the router should be adequate protection.
