WRV200 Firmware 1.0.36 Release Note 10/10/2007 (Beta Testing)

    Issues Fixed:

    1. Attempt to fix a FTP problem by resetting the firewall ALG module hourly. The fix is not applicable to users who do not experience this problem.

    DOWNLOAD: WRV200 v1.0.35 Beta Firmware

    DOWNLOAD: WRV200 v1.0.36 Beta Firmware

Please give as much info on WAN setup and how to replicate any FTP issue you still have with this firmware.

1.0..36 is applicable to all WAN connection types. 1.0.35 is specific to DHCP.

Nice to see that an attempt at correcting the FTP issue is being made. :)

I hope to be able to test this out in the next few days but maybe not until next week.

Should this fix the ICQ problems too (especially: what happens after an hour if you are connected to ICQ, will you loose connection and need to reconnect?) ..?
I don't know if hourly is completely enough though... I once - don't know why though- had this problem more than once per hour...

EDIT: Didn't have the ICQ-Problem so far...
BUT: The router is one hour behind although auto-adjust daylight saving time is active...
  4. ghost_zero5

    ghost_zero5 LI Guru Member

Well it seems that FTP keeps working now BUT ICQ not. I just had the problem with ICQ again but unnormal is now that FTP still worked (normally FTP and ICQ stop to work)...
  5. Toxic

    Toxic Administrator Staff Member

what part of icq is not working? is it connecting to the icq server? file transfers broken, what? are you forwarding the correct ICQ ports?
  6. ghost_zero5

    ghost_zero5 LI Guru Member

It suddenly stops to work completely BUT works just fine until that point (like the FTP problem that was why I thought this would have been "fixed" with this firmwrae too but seems to haven't been fixed)...
You lose connection to server and can't reconnect...

Same problem like with FTP previous to v1.0.36...
By adding port 5190 to port triggering you get around this problem but that is not really a solution - best case a workaround (I am not sure, you might still have at least to reconnect to ICQ sometimes but it won't stop to work completely at least but in any case it is no real solution)...

Regarding forwarding: There should be no need to forward ports (except for file transfers - never had to do with any other router) - especially if you forward ports you can only connect to ICQ from one PC...
  7. Toxic

    Toxic Administrator Staff Member

and did you try port forwarding? (NOT port triggering) you will find many vendors have workarounds/solutions for ICQ and routers by port forwarding. just google it and you will see.
  8. ArchCC

    ArchCC LI Guru Member

Yeah... have some problem with ICQ as ghost_zero5. After 3.5 hour ICQ lost connection to the server and can't get it back for few mins. After connetion return it start lost it every few minuts.(it's all about when port triggering off)
When triggering on, ICQ work, lost connections every 1-2 hour, but get it back soon for other 1-2 hour.
    Some happen with eMule...

Try FTP connections (w/o port triggering)... looks like it work, but i am not sure that it not dropd after 4-5 hour... try to test it more longer.

Try to set port forwarding... but if it work you can connect to icq only by 1 PC...

Anyway it seems that next solutions be lookd like : "Get tamburine and when full moon rising dance with it around pile and you, by gods sake, get for your icq connection for next 5 hour". just joke ^_^

what type of WAN connection are you guys on?
  10. ArchCC

    Static IP
Try to use port forwarding after disable triggering. disconnects every 2mins like i say in last message.

    Dead Router?

    Hi all,

I just installed this update and the router never came back. I gave it 30 minutes, thinking it was just really slow installing the update. So I reset it and the lights come on (except for the wireless light) and nothing can connect to it. Not sure if there's anything I can do... this box has been garbage since the second I turned it on and I was hoping this update might make it tolerable (I have to restart the damn thing every day and even then it chokes up when using VPN or FTP).
  12. ghost_zero5

    ghost_zero5 LI Guru Member

I use "Automatic Configuration - DHCP" for WAN-Type...
Here we have more or less something in common - as most people will surely use PPPoE or PPTP... And Static IP and DHCP shouldn't be that much different...
And port forwarding is no real option (because of more reasons but main reasons that I dislike to open any port longer than for a specific period of time at all) - neither is port triggering really one...
  13. juergenjagst

    juergenjagst LI Guru Member

Yes, the NTP time feature is one hour behind regardless of daylight save feature is enabled or not.
Yes, admin interface is not accessible after clicking reboot if using a wireless lan connection. Only power-cycle helps.
Yes, there are still dropouts (~once per day) if using a 2102 ATA. Only power-cycle helps.
Yes, FTP starts fine, but after 1 or 2 transfer-uploads the server becomes unaccessible (without port triggering workaround). Only power cycle helps.

ghost, can you confirm if Port forwarding is working though? everyone is reporting that FTP does not work, but who is using port triggering and who is using port forwarding to see what is broken? WAN type is also welcome in any given info.

I have V1.0.33 and FTP work fine. I use port forwarding (21) and NEVER i have to restart my WRV200. For this, tehcnical of linksys said that the router have to be in an IP range like 192.168.x.x. It's the same bug for the PAP2 ! It's the only one thing that i have to do for working well.
    My configuration is:
    PPoE ADSL (not fixed IP).
MTU of 1400 (for VPN IPSEC)

for all you guys with port triggering problems, can you try port forwarding and see if that resolves the problem?

Also you should upgrade to .35, i've been working the router with any many services as I can use and it's been holding up very well, this includes qos and port forwarding rules.

Hello, i try the firmware 1.0.35 and the 1.0.36, and the problem is solved, thanks, very thanks.
But, now i have problem with live MSN. The msn falls in each short while. why?, you can fix that?
Now i work with firmware 1.0.35 , and i try mtu auto, 1400, 1480, 1450 and the problem persist.
  19. I had the same problem trying the WRV200_1.0.36.img.

The 1.0.35 firmware hourly DHCP renewal feature has a nasty side effect. VPN tunnels are resetted during DHCP renewal procedure. Network connections made through VPN are breaking, every full hour.

Toxic, kspare, and I have seen the problem for ourselves (vpn tunnels rebooting). Due to this only occuring in my lab, it's not such a big deal for me, but for others in a small business environment, this coud be an issue.

Our developer teammate will have this issue by the end of the day and we'll wait back to see what he and his folks will do...

Additionally, I didn't see my ports switching modes (blocking , learning, etc...) so there must be an issue with your port 4. Is the problem still occurring?

  34. Sfor

    Sfor Network Guru Member

Well. I've counted 3 reboots, just tooday. But, I had no SysLog server running. So, I know nothing about the cause of those reboots.
  35. DocLarge

DocLarge Super Moderator Staff Member Member

You're saying that your "vpn tunnels" are rebooting, right? I just want to make sure. I'm using 1.0.35 and my totatal system uptime is 22hrs "but" my vpn tunnels have restarted a few times; they haven't restarted since 1101hrs today so they are stable for now.

What was the outcome with port 4 on your wrv200 going through blocking-forwarding? Did it do it again?

  36. Sfor

    Sfor Network Guru Member

I was busy today, so I was unable to guard my WRV200. Still, I know it rebooted itself 3 times or more.

I have to wait until the SysLog serwer captures some reboot event.

I'm running 1.0.36 now. I saw no VPN related problems with this firmware version, so far.
  37. Sfor

    Sfor Network Guru Member

I lost the GUI access, today. Looks like 1.0.34 is much more resistant to router hang related problems than 1.0.36.

I know my router is not working correctly, but a failing device can be a good test ground for the hardware failure management. 1.0.34 seemed to be extremely resistant to such problems, as it did reboot router on every sign of a failure.

I think I will change the firmware back to the 1.0.34 version. Then I'll replace the router with the other one I have in the remote location. I need to be sure if the frequent reboots problem I'm facing now is caused by the router hardware failure, or if it is caused by some kind of interaction with my LAN devices.
  38. ghost_zero5

    ghost_zero5 LI Guru Member

I will try this next... First I will wait until that error occurs and then activate port forwarding and re-test (and then just to confirm deactivate port-forwarding and re-test too, maybe I will then wait some time too)...

Btw.: I also tried v1.0.35: That "solution" is not really a good idea: With hourly disconnects you get disconnected from ICQ every hour, not to mention about online games and regarding downloads (good with a download manager that is not the problematic but still). VPN of course would experience the same issues...

The router also resets DYNDNS every hour !!!
Your DYNDNS account gets locked after some time, is there a way to make the router renew DYNDNS less often ???

I am on a cable connection, which does not release the IP so often !!
  40. woodmouse

    woodmouse Network Guru Member

I have set the DHCP to 86400 seconds (which was default for DHCP), but it won't change the times that DYNDNS gets refreshed...
After a day or three, you get kicked off.

DynDNS already asked me to put a Windows Client instead, until the issues are solved with this firmware...

You can check ip-refreshes at :

  41. Sfor

    Sfor Network Guru Member

The DHCP Client Lease Time has nothing to do with the WAN DHCP negotiation.

If you are using 1.0.35 firmware, you can do nothing about it, except for the firmware change to 1.0.36 or any older like 1.0.34, for an instance.
  42. woodmouze

    woodmouze LI Guru Member

1.0.35 is specifically for DHCP WAN, and 1.0.36 is for all others... I guess I can install 1.0.36 instead, without a problem (1.0.36 will also incorporate DHCP connections I hope)... if not, I would have to revert to 1.0.35 again...
I will test this now !
  43. Sfor

    No. You are wrong.
DHCP works correctly in the 1.0.36. But, I do believe 1.0.34 is more stable.

It still works :) -- will see if it renews DYNDNS in 30 minutes (it is already running 30 minutes with 1.0.36)

I now tried port forwarding and it didn't solve my ICQ Problem (Port Triggering does though).
Not even putting my PC into DMZ did solve the ICQ Problem.
Interesting though: This time even FTP didn't work (last time FTP worked and ICQ didn't because of v1.0.36 - this time both aren't working - well I try to wait one hour or so to see if after the firewall ALG modul restart FTP might work again and to see what happens to ICQ and then retest port forwarding).
  47. juergenjagst

    juergenjagst LI Guru Member

Those 1 hour stuff shows that LinkSys firmware guys do not have a clue how to fix
this problem...they are looking for a quick and dirty workaround...absolute wrong way.

New thing: Connecting via WLAN (WPA-PSK TKIP , fixed MAC-IP assignment) at fixed
IP-numbers on WRV200 and computer causes loss of connection at least once
per day on all protocol port numbers. WLAN hangs. No reconnect. Only requesting an IP
via DHCP from WRV200 works. DHCP extreeeeemly low.

  48. ghost_zero5

    ghost_zero5 LI Guru Member

Nope... Even after one hour... FTP and ICQ were still not working... Only with port triggering enabled they did...
So it seems that there might be different problems that cause FTP and ICQ to stop working (one might be related to the firewall modul - or that one doesn't exist at all) and one seems to have a completely different source (I guess it is related to the WAN-Connection because if I release DHCP and renew it works again (like v1.0.35 would do every hour but I can't let the router release and renew every hour automatically)....

Such types of workarounds are never really good (i mean restart something to keep things working isn't really great - especially if it doesn't work in every cases)...

Btw.: In this firmware (don't know about v1.0.34 - had only v1.0.33 installed before trying this firmware) the problem with daylight savings time still exists ...

I wonder though: This bug wasn't there until a certain firmware version (I believe it was v1.0.26 or v1.0.29), was it?
Until this one gets fixed I will currently use the "Brussels, ..." (also GMT+1 timezone) as there I get the correct time BUT I am not sure if it will then set automatically to none-daylight-saving-time at the correct date...

Is it only me or the (official) is the only one where QuickVPN works well. I couldn't use the tunnel after migrating to 1.0.36 and so tried 1.0.34 and 1.0.33 with the same issue. Returned to but the issue with the GUI is a real stopper so we're returning the devices and buying another brand.

And I loved some old Linksys routers... it seems the Cisco buyout brought the same issues we experience with IOS on their routers. Constant and permanent bugs.

For problems with the PAP2, you MUST have a network like this : 192.168.x.x
I was having the same problems and the support of linksys told me to do this! and it's ok now !!
  64. Sfor

    Sfor Network Guru Member

I'm doing direct IP dials to outside of my LAN with my PAP2 adapter.

So far everything was working very well. But, recently I started to do dials through VPN tunnels. In order to do so I had to change the PAP2 settings. To be more precise I had to remove "EXT IP:" setting I was using so far. I was able to connect through VPN tunnel, but other problems started, to appear.

After an investigation I came to conclusion the SIP application layer gateway hangs, from time to time. With the "SIP application layer gateway" disabled I was able to make calls. After enabling it back, the calls were working in just one direction.

I'm using port forwarding feature, so the SIP application layer gateway is not necesary for me. Ports 5060-5061 and 16384-16482 are forwarded to the PAP2 LAN IP. If the EXT IP in the PAP2 is set to the WAN IP of the WRV200 everything is working correctly, with exception for the VPN tunnel dialing. But with the EXT IP disabled I had to disable the "SIP application layer gateway" in the WRV200, as well.

The EXT IP setting is available on the PAP2: admin login - advanced view - SIP screen, and its off by default (as far as I know).

The "SIP application layer gateway" setting is available on WRV200 firewall screen, and it's on by default..
  65. cactusfazer

    cactusfazer Network Guru Member

I don't understand why you want to make call from a VPN tunnel !
For the configuration of the PAP2, i can't see what you are doing because my PAP2 is pre-configured for phonesystems.
For my configuration, i use VPN tunnel for connecting to work and WRV200 have not port forwarding for the PAP2. The application layer gateway is enabled.
Try to put the PAP2 on the DMZ.
    What IP have the WRV200?
  66. Sfor

    Sfor Network Guru Member

I do not want to dial from a VPN tunnel, I want to dial through it. I mean two PAP2 adapters on both ends of the tunnel. In case the offsite WAN IP changes the offsite PAP does have the same LAN IP, still. So, it is possible to connect to it using the same IP, always.

I have an unlocked PAP2. So, I have the access to every option.

If I would put the PAP2 in the DMZ zone I would give the access to all it's ports. With the port forwarding feature I have a better security, I believe.

The port forwarding, or the DMZ can replace the "SIP application layer gateway" in most cases. I proved the SIP gateway does not work reliably, so it is better to use the port forwarding or DMZ, instead.

Today, the same problem happend with another WRV200. After disabling the SIP gateway, the SIP communication started to work properly, just as in case of my WRV200.
  67. pablito

    pablito Network Guru Member

Are you saying that SIP over the VPN is or isn't working reliably? That is how I do it and so far it is flawless. For non VPN routing I can't say as I've done it with RVs other than the RV200. Unless you are making direct SIP calls to the unit you generally don't need port forwarding if the PAP is registering to a PBX or service outside.
  68. Sfor

    Sfor Network Guru Member

I said I had to remove the EXT IP setting in the PAP2. As, it did not want to do direct IP dials with this option set.

Without the EXT IP setting, the direct IP dials through WAN were failing from time to time. So, I had to disable the SIP application layer gateway in the WRV200.

Since i installed 1.0.36 i can't access the router and internet by wireless lan after a couple of days. It seems, that the DHCP Server assigns no ip adress to the computer.
Switching the router off and on did not work.

    Edit 03.12.07:

I think i found the problem:

I assigned static ip for the PC. I had no problems with it in earlier firmware versions or with 1.0.36 and cable connected clients.
    So i removed the entrie.

    Hi gents,
last week I upgraded from to 10.0.36 and it solved my issue with torrents (and hanging wrv200), however I am suffering from two problems:
    1. unability to make icq protocol (using miranda) to work. (msn and jabber work ok).
    2. I am unable to connect via cisco vpn client to work.

I have got adsl 2048/128. (Both of my apps two work without any issue via my 3g pcmcia card so the problem won't be in my laptop's conf. And I generaly don't see any reason, why they should require any kind of router's special setting.)

So far I have testing via wireless connection. I'll try direct rj45 to check if it makes any difference... What I am thinink about is possibility, that my router uses nat AND my provider also uses a sort of nat. (Despite of having public ip...) This could potentialy case problem with cisco IPsec...

    2. Regarding cisco vpn, the behavior was on wifi is different than via rj45... (but still unsuccessful, however problem could be elsewhere :) )...

WRV200 with beta 1.0.36 SIP failure after 15 hours

I have tried several firmware version from 1.0.32 thru 1.0.36 and all have left me with no VOIP service after some number of hours. Version 1.0.32 seemed the best for the number of hours before failure. The time differential could be a result of the difference in normal internet traffic or at least this could be noted. In my case the number of users could vary from 1 to 6.

    My Setup for the WRV200:
    1. Wireless has been disabled to remove this has a factor.
    2. 5 VlLANs configure, only 2 used. VLAN 1 is for normal user internet traffic and this configure on ports 3&4, port 4 only one used and is tied to SR216. VLAN 5 is configured for ports 1&2 and port 1 is only one used and is connected to a Grandstream GXW-4008 configured in bridge mode with a Linksys PAP on the switch port of the GXW-4008.
    3. SIP ALG Enabled
    4. QOS - Bandwidth allocation only SIP 65%

I have tired both port forwarding and DMZing as well as disabling the SIP ALG. All seem to result in both the GXW-4008 and the Linksys-PAP dropping SIP packets. I have not put a packet sniffer to monitor during the failing state, since it's a remote office. It would have been nice to have use the VPN to packet sniff, but that is not possible....

    Any thoughts...comments?

    Cannot download

I would love to download these files but whenever I try, I am told that it is an Invalid File ID, and I get redirected. Is there anywhere else I can get the firmware?

The newest beta is 1.0.38, now.

The downloads of beta firmware versions are not available any longer.

You should contact the Linksys support. Linksys stopped providing beta firmware revisions on public servers.

Once you get it, do ask them for the source. They are obligated by the GPL to give it to you. And you are then allowed to give it to us. Please do! I'd really like to get the latest source.

    WRV 200 Firmware Beta

Well, I was having an interesting problem with my WRV200 in which I was basically getting a ping flood coming from my router to the broadcast address, This started about 20 minutes after my router was turned on, or rebooted. It would start of slow, just one ping per second, then it would gradually increase to over 20 pings per sec or more. This, in effect, crashed the router, and I would have to reboot.
I eliminated this being a DoS attack by disconnecting my internet and deactivating my wireless on the router. I then narrowed it down to being triggered by my boss's brand new Dell Dell Latitude D830. The ping flood continued even after the Latitude was shut off, until the router was rebooted. However, it did not happen on any other router model or brand.
I contacted Linksys tech support and the case was escalated to a Case Escalation Manager, (i'm not sure what that means) who said the matter was going to be brought to the attention of Engineering. He also said that they had only heard of this issue a few times before. When I asked for some beta firmware, I was told I needed to wait until it was investigated by engineering and rewritten.
Currently, I'm hoping to hear back about some new Beta firmware.

If anyone knows anything about this issue, please let me know. I have packet capture file from Wireshark that shows some interesting info.

The newest beta 1.0.37 and 1.0.38 are much better, then the official firmware.

The development of the firmware for this particular device is quite slow. Unfortunatelly, we have paid for it, already. This device is very cheap, when compared to the advertised parameters. No wonder, it runs on a "cheap" firmware.

It will be necesary to do the factory defaults routine, after the upgrade.

It is wise to do the same before the update, in order to be sure the upgrade will go correctly.
